SOFIA URBAN ART. History of graffiti and street art in Sofia

The exhibition “Sofia Urban Art” is a continuation of the book “Sofia Urban Art. History of Graffiti and Street Art from the 90s to now, which we published in December 2023, as an attempt to trace the development of this subculture in the Bulgarian capital.

Building on years of research, collecting archival footage, numerous conversations with artists and organizers, through photographs and documentary materials, the exhibition presents the graffiti scene in three separate decades (1990-1999, 2000-2009, 2010-2019), as well as in the years since 2020. The exhibition includes many archival footage that did not make it into the book. From the first “bombs” and “galleries”, group “jams”, festivals and exhibitions to the painting of entire turbots, graffiti in Sofia has gone from protest art to a fully accepted part of the city’s contemporary culture.
